Tall windows of coloured glass fill the interior with shifting colours, and the ceiling seems to float far above your head. This effect was not an accident. It was the result of several engineering ideas coming together in medieval Europe.

The pointed arch

Earlier Romanesque churches used rounded arches, which push outwards strongly and need thick walls to stay up. The pointed arch directs more of the weight downwards. This allowed builders to make arches of different widths reach the same height and to raise vaults higher than before.

Ribbed vaults

Instead of a solid stone ceiling, Gothic builders created a skeleton of stone ribs and filled the spaces between them with lighter material. The ribs carried the load down to specific points, which meant the walls between those points no longer had to support much weight.

Flying buttresses

The most recognisable feature of Gothic architecture is the flying buttress, an external arm of stone that braces the upper walls from outside. With the outward thrust handled by buttresses, the walls could be opened up into huge windows.

Built over generations

Many cathedrals took a century or more to complete. Workers who laid the foundations rarely lived to see the finished building. That long view, combined with remarkable practical knowledge, produced some of the most impressive structures ever built without modern machinery.

Walk into a Gothic cathedral and the first thing you notice is light.
