  • Packing Light: Travelling With Only a Carry-On

Travelling with nothing but a carry-on bag feels liberating. There is no waiting at the baggage carousel, no worrying about lost luggage and no dragging a heavy suitcase up stairs. With the right approach, you can travel for weeks with a single small bag.

    Build a capsule wardrobe

Choose clothes in a small range of colours that all go together. Three tops, two bottoms and one layer for warmth can create many different outfits. Fabrics like merino wool resist odour and can be worn several times before washing.

    Plan to do laundry

You do not need to pack for every day of your trip. Plan to wash clothes once a week, either in a sink or at a laundrette. Quick-drying fabrics make this much easier.

    Downsize your toiletries

Buy travel-size containers, or switch to solid shampoo and soap bars, which do not count as liquids. Many items, from sunscreen to toothpaste, can be bought at your destination.

    Wear your bulkiest items

Wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on the plane. Packing cubes help compress clothes and keep your bag organised, so you can find what you need without unpacking everything.
