  • How to Choose Natural Light for Your Home

Natural light is one of the most valuable features a home can have. It makes rooms feel larger, improves mood and reduces the need for artificial lighting. If you are building, renovating or simply choosing a new place to live, it is worth thinking about how light enters each room.

    Orientation matters

In the northern hemisphere, south-facing rooms receive the most sunlight throughout the day, while north-facing rooms get softer, more even light. East-facing rooms are bright in the morning, which suits bedrooms and kitchens. West-facing rooms catch the evening sun, ideal for living rooms.

    Window size and placement

Taller windows bring light deeper into a room than wide, short ones. Windows on two sides of a room create a balanced light and reduce harsh shadows. Skylights and roof windows can bring light into spaces that have no external walls at all.

    Surfaces make a difference

Light-coloured walls, ceilings and floors reflect light around a room. Mirrors placed opposite windows can effectively double the light reaching a dark corner. Glossy or satin finishes reflect more than matte ones.

    Controlling too much light

More light is not always better. Rooms facing strong afternoon sun can overheat in summer. External shading, deep window reveals, blinds and plants help manage glare and heat while keeping the room bright.
