  • A Beginner’s Guide to Birdwatching

Birdwatching is one of the most accessible outdoor hobbies. You can practise it in a city park, a garden or from your kitchen window, and all you really need is curiosity and a little patience.

    Start where you are

Begin by learning the common birds around your home. Notice their size, shape, colour and behaviour. Once you know the regular visitors well, unusual birds will stand out immediately.

    Useful equipment

A pair of binoculars makes a huge difference. Models labelled 8×42 are a popular all-round choice, offering good magnification and a bright image. A regional field guide or a bird identification app will help you put names to what you see.

    Listen as well as look

Many birds are heard long before they are seen. Learning a few common songs and calls will help you find and identify birds in dense trees and hedges. Early morning, when birds are most vocal, is the best time to practise.

    Be a considerate observer

Keep your distance, especially during the breeding season, and never disturb nests. Stay on paths and respect private land. Recording your sightings in a notebook or contributing them to citizen science projects adds another rewarding dimension to the hobby.
