  • A Weekend in Lisbon on a Budget

Lisbon is one of Europe's most charming capitals, and it remains more affordable than many of its neighbours. With a little planning, a weekend there can be relaxed, delicious and easy on the wallet.

    Getting around

The city is built on seven hills, so comfortable shoes are a must. A rechargeable transport card covers the metro, buses and the famous yellow trams. Tram 28 is scenic but crowded; riding it early in the morning gives you a much more pleasant experience.

    Free and cheap sights

Many of Lisbon's best experiences cost nothing. Wander the narrow streets of Alfama, watch the sunset from one of the miradouros (viewpoints), and stroll along the riverfront to Belém. Several museums offer free entry on certain days.

    Eating well for less

Look for small local restaurants offering a "prato do dia", or dish of the day, often with soup and a drink included. Grilled sardines, bifanas (pork sandwiches) and of course pastéis de nata, the custard tarts, are delicious and inexpensive.

    Where to stay

Neighbourhoods just outside the historic centre, such as Arroios or Graça, offer good-value guesthouses and an authentic local atmosphere, while still being a short walk or metro ride from the main sights.
